My makeup collection has grown quite a bit since I started my blog Makeup, Beauty & Fashion back in 2008. I have items in my collection that I used to use all the time but have fallen out of love with, colors that I don't like or reach for anymore and probably some products that have expired and needs to be thrown out ASAP!
I feel a little overwhelmed with my makeup collection at the moment, which is why I have decided to do a proper clean-out. I really want to down-size and organize my collection and get rid of products that I don't like or use anymore. I really want to appreciate my collection for what it is and make sure that I'm using everything that I have! :-)

What do you guys do with products that you don't use anymore? Do you just throw them out or do you give them away to friends and family? I'm going to place everything that I'm not going to keep in a bin, then my mom gets to go though it and pick whatever she wants from the pile. Then I think I'm going to put together a couple of bundles with the products that are left and give them away to the younger girls in our family. They are into makeup as well, so I think that they are going to appreciate and have a lot of fun with them. I don't like to throw things away, I would much rather just give them away to people who want/need them.
Blog sales are quite popular and it's a great way to sell new/used items that you don't want anymore. I have bought a couple of makeup items and nail polishes from blog sales in the past, but never done one myself. I think they are super fun, but I'm not sure if it's something that I want to do on my blog. What are your thoughts on blog sales? Have you bought anything from a blog sale before?

How
often do you clean out your makeup collection? What do you do with
products that you don't use anymore? Would you like to see a post on how
I store and organize my makeup? If you are interested, I will do a post on it
as soon as I'm done sorting out everything! :-)
Love, Christine ♥

I do regular clear outs & give my unwanted or unused products to my sister in law's nieces (my own nieces are very young). They are in their early teens and just love to get bags of goodies! xx

That is such a good idea, I should do regular clean outs as well instead of just one big every once in a while. It definitely makes things easier to organize and keep track off :-) x
DeleteYes.. Make up organization post please.. :)
ReplyDeleteI do give my stuff that I don't use anymore to my younger sisters - They love it!

I will definitely be giving away some to my sister, she has a thing for nail polishes like myself ha ha :-) x
DeleteThis is such a sweet idea! I'm completely awful at cleaning up my makeup collection---I hang on to things for way too long, but with this sweet idea I definitely know what to do now <3

Yeah, been hanging on for way too long now ha ha :-) Thank you for your lovely comment honey <3 xx
DeleteI have a few methods of cleaning out my makeup. First I pull out all the lip glosses and check for smell and if i like the formula. If they smell funny or look funny it gets tossed (if its a MAC product that has to get tossed I put that into a baggie for back to Mac). Then with the remaining lip products, I often have a little cup that I put the lip glosses in and for the next few months I have to see if I will use them. if it doesn't get used after those 6 months, it goes bye, bye. I try to keep no more than 5 lip glosses. If I had a cold during the time I used a lip gloss, it goes too (contamination issues). For lip sticks, I do the same, if it smells funny it has to go. if the color doesn't match my taste I has to go. If I got sick during the time I wore it, I spray rubbing alcohol and wipe it clean (I won't throw out a lipstick as easy as I do a lip gloss). My stash of lipstick can range from 20-30 (I use to have over 100 so 20-30 is actually a good number for me).
ReplyDeleteFor eyeshadows, I like to keep my colors in the neutral side so anything that's purple, blue, green, or any color that I can't wear in a corporate office has to get tossed or be put in the donate bin (this is my initial cleanup of makeup but after the first purge it gets easier). For eyeshadows I often look at the formula of the shadow...if it's starting to cake up or smell funny its getting tossed and NOT the donate bin, it goes to the garbage. Anything that's still good but the color doesn't match me, I will donate.
Blushes and bronzers are harder for me to toss, but my rule of thumb is, if I have touched it in the last 6-12 months, it has to find a new home because real estate in my makeup drawers are expensive so either you wow me or you're going to have to find a new owner. (I live in NYC so it's true about real estate being expensive because I’m paying for storing stuff that's not being used).
I don't use foundation so I've tossed every one of them except one for a just in case, but I'll probably throw it out after this summer. Haven't touched the foundation since last September for my best friend’s wedding and even during that day I ended up not wearing any foundation because I didn’t like how it felt on my skin (it felt tight like I was wearing a mask).
My weakness is my nail polish collection. I have over 200 polishes, but I’ve narrowed it down to 150 right now. I did however toss into the donate bag all my OPIs and all the other brands that don't have the 5 free chemical (sensitive nose and the smell lingers in my room too long if it doesn't have the 5 Free). I also like the 5 Free because those are the polishes that pregnant women can use (not that I’m pregnant, but if it’s okay for mothers to me then it's good for me too). Back to how I swatch my polishes - I went on eBay to buy those nail wheels that salons use to show their nail art color and I paint every polish on those nails so I can get a good look at the formula as well as the color just to see if it matches my skin tone. If it doesn't and I feel that to color isn't my style anymore, it goes to the donation bin. This process takes about a day or so because of the polish drying so I label the nails with the brand and color then I go back to it and see if it matches my skin tone with the color If I like I keep, if I don’t it goes. The only way I keep a funky color is if it’s unique and I plan to use it as an accent color on my nails. It if doesn’t get used the next time I do a polish purge, it will go.
That’s it on how I purge my makeup and polishes. Sorry for this long entry but I thought I would share what I do to get rid of stuff I don’t want/need. Have a nice day.
I think it's a great idea to give to your mom and family members first. I haven't ever purchased anything from a blog sale but I mostly only see them UK only. I would buy things if the price was affordable. I keep a bag of items I'm not using and give it to my local women's shelter. They get super excited about things like that. I'd love to see your make-up and storage. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is such a nice and thoughtful thing of you to do. I don't think there is a local women's shelter in my area, but I'm going to do some research. I would love to stop by and donate some items.
DeleteThat's wonderful, then I will make sure to get that post up as soon as everything is how I like it to be :-) x
I keep them in case I run out of the ones I do use.
ReplyDeleteI've forgotten to buy foundation before and its been a disaster but now I have my old one as a back up!

That's a nice idea. What foundation are you currently using? :-D x
DeleteGreat blog huni, I just followed. xx
ReplyDeleteGosh I clean up my collection every year. See what is off and chuck away and give away what I dont use to friends. I hate throwing things away too. I find it such a waste and hate the fact some of the items are so expensive. I am not sure if I would buy make up from a blog sale unless unused, I am a bit funny like that and prefer to have everything new.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for following honey, you rock <3 Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why I'm hesitating to do a blog sale, it's just not my thing :-) x
DeleteI tend to put them in a drawer, forget I have them then rediscover them months later haha

Hoard them! :/ Lol! They just sit in my makeup drawers unused! I've been telling myself that I'm going to go through EVERYTHING and reorganize and get rid of things but I haven't had much time. New baby = no time for mama! I did just buy a spinning organizer from tjmaxx and I'm planning on organizing my most used brushes and lip and eye pencils in it. Hopefully I can get around to doing that soon!
ReplyDeleteI give a lot of my beauty products to a local shelter, but only if they're new/barely used and can be enjoyed by someone else!
ReplyDeleteI used to do online swaps but the swap site was extremely catty, and if you had a bad swap that wasn't your fault, your name would forever be posted on an external "bad swapper" site. Unfortunately I ended up on that list even though I did nothing wrong. It was very much a "you are guilty unless you can provide us irrefutable evidence that you are innocent"....even though the other person had to do nothing more than badmouth you with no proof whatsoever. I guess you could say it all left a very bad taste in my mouth! (Hundreds of nothing but positive feedback and one bad egg ruined the whole thing for me.) Sigh.
I try to limit what I buy and have limits on how much I accumulate. I only allow myself so many nail polishes that must fit into a certain size container, so when I buy a new one, and old one must go!
Other products shouldn't be shared, so when I'm done with them, they go in the trash. It does stink when I try a product once and if I don't like it, it must be thrown away (ie mascara). I go through those like crazy!
